Kirby Nonagon
At the time of its completion, the Nonagon stands as the largest permitted hempcrete building on the West Coast, spanning over 3,800 square feet. Designed as both a residence and a place of business, this remarkable structure integrates hemp-lime construction with artisanal craftsmanship and traditional timber framing to push the boundaries of natural building.
The residential wing features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, providing a comfortable and energy-efficient living space. The business wing includes a dedicated office, a treatment room, ample storage, and a breathtaking community gathering area, making the Nonagon a hub for both work and connection.
At the heart of the structure is its one of a kind nine-sided timber frame, crafted with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Above, a double reciprocal roof forms an intricate nine-pointed enneagram, where beams intersect mid-span in a mesmerizing woven star pattern that is both structural and visually striking.
With hemp-lime walls inside and out, the Nonagon is a testament to the possibilities of merging high-performance natural materials with fine craftsmanship. It is a pioneering example of sustainable design, architectural innovation, and the artistry of building with nature.
