Rickenbach Residence

This 2,000 SF single-story home is the first permitted hemp-lime (hempcrete) residence in Hood River County, Oregon—a milestone project that showcases innovative, sustainable building practices. Designed with both beauty and performance in mind, the home features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious living area, and a generous primary suite. Varying ceiling heights throughout the house help define spaces while maintaining an open, flowing floor plan. The main living area is highlighted by soaring vaulted ceilings and an expansive loft with hidden passageways designed to inspire play and exploration for the children.

All interior and exterior walls are constructed using hemp-lime, combining encapsulated stud framing and flush stud framing techniques. The walls are 12 inches thick, with a continuous wrap of natural insulation. Paired with passive solar design strategies and an integrated radiant floor heating system, this home delivers outstanding energy performance and year-round comfort.

The structure is completely free of drywall. Ceilings are finished with warm pine tongue-and-groove paneling, while interior walls are coated in clay plaster and exterior walls are finished with lime plaster—prioritizing healthy, non-toxic materials throughout. Custom details include hemp-lime niches, interior post and beam elements, and window seats with locally sourced live-edge slabs, adding both craftsmanship and character.

The overall aesthetic blends a rustic farmstead charm with simple modern touches, creating a space that feels timeless, natural, and deeply connected to its environment.
