Kirkby Nonagon

Designed and Developed in collaboration with Rjika Timberframes, the project was envisioned as a celebration of craftsmanship and artistry, bringing together natural materials, structural innovation, and time-honored joinery. At the time of its completion, the Nonagon stood as the largest permitted hempcrete building on the West Coast, spanning over 3,800 square feet. Designed as both a residence and a place of business, this remarkable structure integrates hemp-lime construction with artisanal detailing and traditional timber framing to push the boundaries of natural building.

The residential wing features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, offering comfortable, energy-efficient living. The business wing includes a dedicated office, a treatment room, generous storage, and a stunning community gathering space, making the Nonagon both a home and a hub for connection and healing.

At the heart of the building is its one-of-a-kind nine-sided timber frame, crafted with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Above, a double reciprocal roof forms a striking nine-pointed enneagram, where beams intersect mid-span in a woven star pattern that is as structurally robust as it is visually captivating.

With hemp-lime walls throughout and an emphasis on natural finishes, the Nonagon stands as a testament to what’s possible when sustainability, beauty, and skilled craftsmanship come together. It remains a pioneering example of what it means to build artfully—with nature and with purpose.
